Stop scalding through shower power

Luxury shower brand Insignia has launched a gadget to help prevent scalding in the bathroom.

The NHS sees more than 300 people a year admitted to its specialist burns service for severe scalds from hot water in their shower, bath or sink. More than two thirds of these are children. A further 1,600 people are estimated to be seen by UK emergency departments for lesser burns.

Known for its steam and hydro-massage showers, Insignia has launched a digital showerhead powered by dynamo technology. Powered by water pressure, and using coloured safety lights and a digital display the shower can provide precise water-temperature control.

Leon Maclean, managing director at Insignia, said: “The digital showerhead is designed to give greater control and awareness over the temperature of the water you’re using. It obviously gives greater peace of mind on how hot the water is for children and in general will lower the risk of scalding in the bathroom.”

He added: “The product isn’t just about scald prevention though, it’s simply about giving greater control of the temperature your showering at. The fact is, showers which are too hot aren’t good for your skin health anyway.”

Dermatologists recommend that your shower should be no warmer than your skin temperature around 34°C to 37°C to promote good skin health. Any hotter and the heat can strip the skin's oil barrier, allowing moisture to escape more easily, leading to dry and itchy skin. The hotter the shower and the longer you spend in the shower, the more moisture you’re likely to lose.

The Insignia showerhead retails at £39.95, you can find out more at www.insigniarange.co.uk.
