A new creative construction toy is taking the early-years sector by storm. Yorkshire artist and former teacher David Veron devised U-nu from a specially engineered coloured woodbased material that is environmentfriendly and safe for youngsters.
The toy was developed initially for use in Veron’s wife’s nursery and is fast becoming a must-have resource for early-years settings, childminders and primary schools. Made in Yorkshire, it is moisture and UV resistant, non-toxic, hand-finished and complies with EN71 standards.
The beauty of the toy, says Veron, is that it can be as simple or as sophisticated as a child wants it to be. He came up with the concept of using seven different geometric shapes with u-shaped slots so that they can fit together. The pieces have an appealing retro look and are 8mm thick in size. They are finished in sustainable organic pigments in five natural-looking pieces ranging from 7.5cm to 15cm in size.
“When we first put a set into a room full of kids they loved it,” Veron said. “They liked the colours and the tactile qualities and the three-year olds just kept coming back day after day. “Because I come from a teaching background, I know that poor resources get poor outcomes for children,” he said. “I would like to see U-nu in every nursery and primary school.”
Sets can be bought online at www.u-nu.co.uk and range from 35 to 280 pieces andfrom £55 to £395 in price.
